Best Reasons to get married in Ireland
There are so many reasons why Ireland would be perfect for your nuptials. The charm and friendliness of its people are a byword. It offers an abundance of remarkable venues, from the ancient and dignified, the truly quaint (here even the windmills are rumoured to go backwards), the blending of a rich culture and history, fine cities and villages, and breath-taking scenery.
Everywhere, romance is in the air – this after all is the home of the Claddagh ring. These exquisite tokens of fidelity were conceived by a Galway man, Richard Joyce, to give to his beloved after thirty years in exile.
For the more sporting and adventurous, Ireland is renowned for its golf facilities, and a vast number of other activities are on offer, from angling, sailing, hiking and cycling, to the Gaelic sports of football and hurling (not to mention rugby!).
The old castles are a must. When you visit an Irish castle, they say it’s like stepping into a living museum of Irish history. At Blarney Castle in county Cork you can win the gift of eloquence by kissing the legendary stone.
And when the big day is over, and it’s just the two of you, you can relax and soak up the beauty with romantic walks along the golden sands of the rocky shorelines, exploring the lush green valleys, climbing the gentle mountain peaks, and gazing down over shimmering lakes.
If you are passionate about food, you can’t fail to give your guests a memorable experience in Ireland. The oysters, the food of love are unsurpassed, and what better way to down them with than a pint (or several) of Guinness? But then again, what visit to Ireland wouldn’t be complete without a Guinness?
My Favorite Properties
Adare Manor ~ Limerick Ireland
There is scarcely a more romantic place than Adare Manor to act as your destination wedding host. From the Fairy Tale Spire of the Wyndham Tower, to the elaborate, ornate rooms of Lady Caroline’s Suite, the magic of the Manor will surround and embrace you. Your guests will be welcomed by the lofty heights of the great hall, The Minstrels’ Gallery inside, and the leafy surrounds of the Manor grounds outdoors. Just for the two of you, capture a few quiet moments together across the walled gardens and in the little pockets of peace along the river and under the centuries-old Lebanese Cedar Tree.
Lady Caroline was the extravagant driving force behind the Dunraven Dynasty and telltale signs of her delicate touch are still apparent in many of the details throughout the Manor whispering a hint of Caroline and her penchant for luxury and splendor. All of the bedrooms are unique – expect carved headboards, expansive adjoining bathrooms, and original fireplaces – with each room sharing its own unique story. Guests can choose to dine at one of the many excellent restaurants on location or opt to remain in the comfort of their own room where a tantalizing in-room menu awaits providing the perfect excuse to never leave your private enclave at all if that’s your choice. What honeymooning couple wouldn’t love that option?
Of course if you adore the sport of golf, you will hear the links calling your name. Adare Manor features the last major golf course designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Senior – his majestic design garnering international acclaim as one of his finest creations.
Situated in County Limerick, just a few short miles away from the Shannon airport, Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort simply offers one of the finest backdrops for any couple to exchange their vows and begin the rest of their married life together. This breath-taking venue has it all – an exotic history dating back to the 1830’s, beautiful parklands, the finest in Irish hospitality, and of course, lots of old world romance. Whether you are inviting 200 guests or just a few close friends and family, Adare Manor is at the top of my favourites list and I am proud to recommend it.
Mount Juliet ~ Kilkenny, Ireland
Named by the Earl of Carrick in honour of his wife Juliet, Mount Juliet is a gorgeous Georgian Mansion located just outside the medieval city of Kilkenny in County Kerry, Ireland. This beautiful 1500 acre, walled estate overlooking the River Nore, is considered by many to be the most prestigious sporting estate in Ireland and the perfect location for an active couple’s exclusive wedding. Offering a championship golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, an outstanding equestrian centre and numerous trail ride options, fishing and angling in the river that meanders alongside the estate, and clay-pigeon shooting to name but a few, there will never be a shortage of things to do at this lovely property.
For those guests interested in a more relaxed experience, Mount Juliet offers a state of the art health club and spa using a prestigious range of ESPA products, an indoor swimming pool and sauna, and a variety of walks and trails throughout the estate. All bedrooms have been individually designed and are available in the main house with additional clubhouse rooms bordering the golf course, and there are even two and three bedroom homes available for your guests who prefer to share their quarters with their nearest and dearest friends.
Mount Juliet offers three outstanding restaurant options including the 2AA award winning Helen restaurant. With its panoramic views and offering a variety of international dishes using the finest ingredients and herbs from the estate’s own herb garden, Helen offers diners an incomparable culinary experience. For the more casual diner, consider Kendals French Brasserie, a 1AA rosette award winner offering comfort food and dishes inspired by French brasserie classics. If lighter fare such as soups and salads is what you have a taste for, consider the President’s Bar overlooking the golf course.
Choose from either the Mount Juliet House or the Clubhouse/Kendals Restaurant overlooking the golf course for your wedding celebration. And when the festivities are over, couples will no doubt enjoy the exclusive bridal suite on property boasting a magnificent four poster bed with separate sitting room and an unparalleled view of the River Nore through the suite’s Georgian curved windows. A wide range of wedding packages are available with some including a hot shave for the groom on the wedding day, personalized menus and place cards, and a bottle of champagne and sandwiches for the wedding party. As one of the oldest surviving walled estates in Europe, Mount Juliet is easily one of Ireland’s most romantic, private, and discerning destination wedding locations any couple could ask for.
